About Philotist
Hey, I'm Matthew. Here at Philotist I focus on making art that asks us to question how we see the world. We're used to seeing rigid boundaries; We think with statements like 'this is a house', 'this is a butterfly', and 'this is me'. But what makes those statements true? If those statements aren't true, what makes them feel true? Are there different ways of understanding the world? (My belief is 100% yes! And I hope that I can suggest what some of those different ways might be through my work.)
This website will have many changes over the foreseeable future. Our hope is that it will offer a digital catalogue of the things we are creating so that people that aren't able to make it to the art fairs and other events still have an opportunity to create with us and participate in our work. Philotist is based out of St. Paul, MN and we appreciate and want to help grow the community of the Twin Cities. We believe that a healthy community is one where not every interaction is transactional. We want people to show up, build friendships and connections, learn with us, and bring everything they gain back to their own local community! People are very powerful to begin with, but we are all even stronger when we find ways to work cooperatively.
